The Morals of Politicians
In my last blog I brought up the subject of morals and family values, in this blog I want to broach the subject of Politicians and their values and morals. Before I begin I would like to have a hypothetical election for any office between three candidates.
Candidate One:
Almost never rises before 10:00 A.M.
Consumes at least a 5th of Vodka per day.
Smokes at least one pack of cigarettes per day.
Attends church services rarely.
Married but rumored to have illicit affairs.
Candidate Two:
Almost never rises before noon.
Consumes at least one liter of Brandy per day.
Smokes at least twelve cigars per day.
Attends church services rarely
Married but a notorious womanizer.
Candidate Three:
Always in the office before 8:00 A.M, considered a workaholic.
Does not smoke.
Consumes alcohol in moderation.
Vegetarian.
Attends church services on occasion.
Unmarried but is in a monogamous, heterosexual relationship.
Which of the three candidates would you vote for based on personal habits?
Yes there is a point to this and that is, I don’t believe that a politicians habits or lifestyle regardless of how repulsive it may seem disqualifies them from public office and here’s why.
We send our elected officials to the capital either state of federal to do what? Show the rest of the state or country how moral we are? NOT! We send them to do our dirty work, things like raid the pork barrel, make back room deals on our behalf and to push our agenda.
In short we want the people that we send to represent us to do whatever is in OUR best interest, if it turns out to be sleazy we expect them not to get caught. As ugly as that reality is, that’s the way politics in America (and just about everywhere else) works.
So we the Republican voter have just as much blood on our hands when the politicians we elect turn out not to be the nice kid next door. We know full well what we expect from our elected officials, results.
Then to quite literally add insult to injury we have live with the Democrats throwing sleazy behavior in our faces and trying to make us live by this impossible moral standard that we so idiotically set.
The question then becomes, how do we get out of the snare that keeps injuring our party and stops our agenda’s from moving forward? We change the message and the platform we use to deliver that message.
We begin by not throwing elected officials to the dogs for being human, we all make mistakes or in some cases live alternative lifestyles, as long as those mistakes or lifestyles are not a felony, for example a Republican gets caught cheating on their spouse, we simply say “that’s between them and their spouse, it’s really none of anyone’s business.”
We publicly acknowledge that there are two wings of our party, the “practicing people of faith” and the “secular or non-practicing people of faith”. We announce that the two wings are in agreement, we won’t use politics or legislation to impose one set of morals or values over another.
We have Priests and Pastors to guide us morally and Evangelists and Missionaries spread the religious message, however we will use politics to oppose legislation that tramples on the rights of individuals to practice their faith whatever it may be or not to practice their faith or is morally objectionable to those of faith and secular.
We have to make it clear to everyone (including those in our own party) that we realize that not everyone in the GOP share the same views and feelings on morals, that we are a multi-cultural nation which is far different then one hundred years ago when the streets on Sunday morning were empty and church pews were full.
The platform we use for this new stance is one of mutual benefit for the entire nation, closing the borders for the protection of our citizens and the protection of our children’s economic future from those that sneak across the border in the dark of night.
Fighting against punitive and unfair taxes that steal the food from the mouths of our children to feed the insatiable, ravenous hunger for more wasteful government spending.
One final tidbit of information that validates to some degree my argument, candidate one is Franklin D Roosevelt, candidate two is Winston Churchill and the final candidate is Adolf Hitler.
If we used their personal habits and morals as a guide to decide whether or not they were qualified to govern I strongly believe that WWII would have a much different outcome, sauerkraut anyone?
